ANAHEIM, Calif .– Shohei Ohtani donated his winnings from this week’s Home Run Derby to Los Angeles Angels support staff, according to multiple reports on Friday.
The news was first reported by the Orange County Register.
Ohtani donated the $ 150,000 he received to more than two dozen people, including clubhouse staff, coaches and members of the media relations department, according to reports. The two-way Japanese sensation handed over the checks ahead of the Angels’ game on Friday night against the Seattle Mariners.
In addition to becoming the first Japanese player to participate in the Home Run Derby, Ohtani was the first in All-Star Game history to be selected as both a pitcher and a hitter. He pitched a perfect first inning and was 0-for-2 in the AL’s 5-2 win on Tuesday.
Ohtani was the seed in Monday’s derby but was knocked out in the first round after losing a swing-off to Washington’s Juan Soto.
New York Mets’ Pete Alonso won the derby and took home the million dollar prize. Trey Mancini of Baltimore was second and won $ 500,000.
