Summer Brown was riding with his family on Wednesday night when their car appeared to cut a white van in traffic, said Sgt. Vince Lewis, a spokesman for the Phoenix Police Department.

The driver, identified as Joshua Gonzalez, 20, followed them closely for the duration of their journey until they arrived in the driveway, he said.

"The suspect (…) opened fire on the vehicle and hit it several times," Lewis said. "The victims had just arrived at home."

The summer father, Dharquintium Brown, said the suspect "was ready to start firing" upon their arrival.

"I got out of my vehicle and asked him," What's going on? "" he told CNN's subsidiary KNXV. "And he just had to shoot, he fired at my car, he fired at me, and he shot my house and he killed my daughter."
Summer was pronounced dead at a local hospital. His father suffered injuries that did not put his life in danger. He drove the car with his wife and two daughters as passengers. His wife, Taniesha Brown, and their other daughter were not injured, police said.
"This nightmare will replay me forever," said Taniesha Brown, according to the affiliate. "I can not sleep, I hope she's at peace."

After the shooting, the police broadcast a surveillance video showing the truck behind the family car and a composite sketch of the suspect. This generated many tips, one of which drove authorities to the suspect's truck.

The authorities have identified him despite changes that changed his appearance, including different tires, said Lewis. A handgun found at the suspect's home was linked to forensic evidence at the scene, he added.

Gonzalez was sentenced to a term of imprisonment for one count of first degree murder and three counts of aggravated assault, police said. The information about his lawyer was not immediately available.
