Houston Texans safety Jonathan Owens has been on an emotional roller coaster watching his girlfriend, Simone Biles, during the 2020 Olympics.
On July 27, Biles competed in the women’s gymnastics team all-around final. After attempting a year-and-a-half Yurchenko twist instead of an airborne Amanar, Biles went on the sidelines to chat with her coach, Cécile Canqueteau-Landi.
The quadruple gold medalist then retired from the rest of the event. Owens couldn’t help but feel “stomach ache” as he watched everything unfold back to the United States.
“I was sick for her, just because I can see her face, I kind of know her facial expressions, I can kind of read her lips and kind of know what was going on and what she was saying. to his trainer, “Owens, 24. told reporters Thursday.
“I kind of already knew what was going on ahead of time, so I was really hoping that she would get over it and get out there and perform.” So I had a stomach ache because she couldn’t go out there.
The gymnast later revealed the Olympics record and, being the face of American gymnastics, took charge of her sanity. She also said that she has struggled with “twisties”, a phenomenon that can cause gymnasts to lose their sense of space and dimension in the air. Biles later revealed that her aunt had recently passed “unexpectedly”, only adding to what she was dealing with.
Despite the couple being thousands of miles apart and estranged from each other for the longest time since their relationship began, Owens has tried to help Biles stay positive throughout events.
“She was a bit of a funk when everything wasn’t going well,” Owens said. “When you’re used to everything going well for so long, and all of a sudden you have a problem with your performance, you kind of put yourself down, you lose confidence in yourself. And that was kind of one of the things I was trying to make sure… that she stayed positive.
“It was hard for me to really understand what she was going through because I’m not on that stage and I face these pressures and things, but I’m just trying to be as understanding as possible.”
Biles, 24, retired from the all-around and individual finals on vault, floor and uneven bars, but still competed on beam. She managed to capture a bronze medal in the event.
“I was so proud of her,” Owens said. “Just to be able to mentally overcome what was going on.” She kind of tweaked her beam routine, but I was just happy for her.
