The Inside World Festival of Interiors has unveiled a shortlist for its awards for the most convincing, innovative and experimental interior designs of the last twelve months. The wide selection of pre-selected candidates is a perfect insight into the state of interior design in 2018.
Inside World Festival of Interiors is a partner festival of the World Architecture Festival, which is held this year in Amsterdam in November. The prices cover nine categories covering the width of the interior design as something that is complementary to the large architectural installations, and a complete structural design in itself.
Categories cover commercial spaces such as bars and restaurants, retail, hotels and showrooms. There are also categories examining residential interiors, offices and large civic spaces such as museums or libraries. Among this year's most spectacularly creative creations include the installation of Australian artist Chris Fox, defying gravity, who has refitted an old wooden escalator in a Sydney subway, the incredible Bamboo interior of Vo Trong Nghia Architects for a coffee in Vietnam. and a striking apartment in Taiwan that is so white and futuristic it looks like a set of 2001: A Space Odyssey .
One of the most fascinating sets of entries in the short list comes from Shanwei Weng, part of the Chinese design firm AN Design. Two pre-selected entries in the Bar and Restaurant category exemplify this designer's maximalist audacity, but the obsessive metallic chandelier of the Mr Maimai store in Hangzhou takes the cake for a singular idea drawn to its uttermost conclusion.
