" As closest neighbors, the relationship between the United Kingdom and Ireland is unique. Our common history is long and complex.
"Of course there were some difficult and sometimes tragic times of this relationship.
" Tomorrow we hope to have the opportunity to reflect on some of these difficult passages in our history when we visit Croke Park and the famine memorial. "During this visit, we will also celebrate how united we are. This is a very special relationship between two sovereign and proud countries."
"We share common values, culture, ties, and friendship. business, family ties and possibly a similar sense of humor.
"Our relationship is of course guided by our history but it is also dynamic and forward-looking.
" Tonight we are extremely lucky to be joined by many of those who are shaping the future of Ireland. You embody the energy that characterizes this amazing country.
"I have the utmost confidence in the friendship, collaboration and mutual understanding that our two countries have built up over the years and will grow.
" I will end by picking up the words of President Higgins during his extraordinarily successful visit to the United Kingdom in 2014, which we still remember with admiration. He quoted the traditional Irish saying; We live in the shadow of each other. We protect each other and we rely on each other to shelter.
"This feeling is as apt now as it was then that we draw our strength from each other, neighbors, partners and especially friends."
