In The Pirates of Penzance, young apprentice pirate Frederic was 21 years old and therefore completed his apprenticeship with a benevolent group of pirates. At the same time, he falls in love with Mabel, the daughter of the general executor of the forces of order, General Stanley, and the enemy of the pirates. To add to his problems, he learns that because he was born during a leap year, his apprenticeship is technically far from complete.

In addition to directing and choreographing for musical theater, Gray has created original works for Joffrey, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and the American Ballet Theater Workshop. His choreography has also been featured by NY City Opera, the Lincoln Center Live PBS TV, the Béjart Ballet of the twentieth century, the Montreal Jazz Ballets and the Batsheva Dance Company of Israel, among others.
