It was the death that shook Kavin Jayaram (Kavin Jay), marine engineer turned comedian, to take stock of his life and pursue the desire of his heart.
In 2006, Kavin's older brother, Dheepak, died of a heart attack just two weeks before his 30th birthday.
Dheepak had been very involved in the stand-up comedy scene. For years, he had encouraged Kavin to go because he could see his potential.
Kavin had in fact been drawn to a stand-up comedy while he was studying in Newcastle, England, from 1998 to 2002, but did not try it until he died from Dheepak.
The comedy then became an outlet that also gave him the courage to continue and live his life fully.
"When I was studying in Britain, I went to many comedy shows.I was attracted to art, but only as a spectator." When I got home, I realized that there were not a lot of comedians who had shows often – I thought it was something I could do.
"One day in 2006 After my brother passed away and thought that life was too short to turn things off, I decided to gather 150 of my friends in a pub, "says Kavin, 38, in an interview [19659008] "My cousin Andrew is a well-established comedian.We started at the same time.I hated him a bit to do a show because he's a funny guy.I do a lot better than me.
"He was picked up by Harith Iskander to open the door, letting me flirt with the open microphone scene until I'm ready. He did very well, but I did not do well. I thought that was it, but it always pulled me back – I continued to receive calls for concerts, and I continued to do so. Eventually, I grew up in talent and started to take it more seriously. "
Since his debut in 2006, Kavin has performed in numerous shows, both locally and internationally, and his national tour Anger Management will be held from August 3rd to 18th. in selected TGV cinemas
Recalling his former work, Kavin says that he was a Petronas researcher and, in a way, contracted to work for them.He was a marine engineer for about five years before leaving for comedy.And while he was doing comedy, he was working as a mechanical engineer.
About five years ago, he was cut off – that's when he became a full-time comedian
Kavin describes his brand of humor as a story, full of emotion, strewn with clumsiness and "a pinch of things you want to forget".
Kavin remembers his most memorable performances: "I've done so much spectacular during my 12-year career: Pajama Festival (in Mumbai), the Singapore Comedy Fringe Festival, the Perth Fringe Festival and even the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. These shows are the ones I'm most proud of, since I've brought the sense of Malaysian humor to international shores, and showed them that we could easily be as funny, if not funnier than n '39. anyone else.

"My family still thinks that comedy is a phase I go through – they do not understand that c & rsquo; Is my career. Most of them still think that I am an engineer; they do not really understand that someone can have a life doing what I do, "he says ironically.
A married man with a child, Kavin describes her as "a very rebellious five-year-old child … the child, not the wife.
He also reveals that he collects toys for a hobby, then adds, "It's embarrassing when you have more toys than your child." I love Legos and other toys that I can build to destroy them.
He draws inspiration – and new materials for his shows – from his own life and the people who surround him.
"I have beautiful stories to tell. To quote someone else, "comedians are people who make bad choices in life and tell stories on stage". So, that's what I do, I tell stories about my life, and most people seem to relate to them. I have so many stories that I want to share, and I guess my embarrassment, I hope, will make people laugh.
"I have so many uncles and cousins who are stupidly drinking and who are super hilarious. So, I sit there quietly, sober, and write down all the stupid things that they say. When alcohol flows, comedy too. Some of the s # *! they invent gold! ", he says.
He describes his brand of humor as a narration, full of emotion, strewn with clumsiness and" a hint of things you want to forget. "
" I tell stories of my bad decisions in life and the consequences of my actions. My sense of humor should please everyone, but my manager thinks I should sell to the over 18s. "
Kavin shares this since he used all the right material for his Netflix Original debut ( Kavin Jay: Calm Down! ), he had to start from scratch and recompose new ideas – which is not easy
"For the first time in my career, I go blank. It takes a lot of introspection and open microphones to test them, working my craft on stage and off stage. The open microphones are like a gym for an actor, working on material that will be molded in precious stones that will eventually end up in a show, "he says.
How did he land this Netflix Original?
Honest, it's a bit of a shock to have a special Netflix. I thought, to get a special, I had to be like a comedy god like (Dave) Chapel or (Jerry) Seinfeld, but it happened. He still has not completely disappeared. I thought at first that it probably would not go very far and that few people from outside of Southeast Asia would look at it, but I was very much loved and appreciated from all over the world, and it was great.
"This is a tremendous boost, not only for me but for the entire Asian stand-up community where they have a goal to achieve, and get a Netflix Special (or any other network) is not completely out of reach "
