The Red Devils are looking for an Asian player who suits Jose Mourinho's style of play and who will also improve their profile on the continent.
Manchester United is looking for another Asian superstar in the footsteps of Park Ji-sung and Shinji Kagawa.
The Red Devils have had success with the South Korea and Japan internationals over the years, but no Asian player has shone in the first team since Kagawa's departure from Borussia Dortmund in 2014.
But scout Kei Tamura is currently watching matches all over the continent in search of the next big star who will suit Jose Mourinho's playing style and impress at Old Trafford.
"I'm looking for the second Park Ji-sung and Kagawa's successor," said Tamura Sports Seoul.
"I keep track of the players who can be so good.
"We are looking for players who meet the specific criteria of head coach Jose Mourinho.The head of the scouting team meets Mourinho and receives detailed instructions."
European clubs are often attracted to Asian players because of their marketing potential, and Tamura admits that it's a factor for a team like United.
"There is no doubt that the signing of Korean and Japanese players can have a positive effect on the Asian market," he said.
"That's not the reason they are selected, however, the first thing we consider is competence."
Kagawa, meanwhile, has expressed his wish to play in Spain while he's looking to escape a difficult situation at Borussia Dortmund.
After being injured in the campaign last season, the 29-year-old has only made two appearances in the Bundesliga this weekend. Marco Reus took his place in the middle of the attacking pitch.
The Japanese international is determined to return to first team football, but is aware that he may have to leave Germany to get there.
Having already tried his luck in England, the former United man thought that the move to La Liga could be the cure for his current situation.
