Shortly after repaving, the concrete flooring behind several Woodlands buildings in Woodlands turned out to be covered with algae, prompting locals to alert the city council.
A shared photo on the Sunday Reddit forum thread shows dark green spots beside the empty bridge of several blocks of Woodlands Street 81.
The Reddit user said it was "months" since the appearance of algae.
We do not know when the photo was taken.
Several other Reddit users have stated that algae growth could be a potential hazard, especially for older people living in the area who could slip and get hurt.
In response to questions, Sembawang City Council stated that the affected area was near blocks 870-882 and blocks 801, 802 and 804 near Republic Polytechnic.
The city council spokesman said the algae growth was caused by the poor quality of execution due to the remodeling of the concrete surface, carried out between last October and April. "We discussed with the contractor in charge of the re-rendering and he agreed to carry out rectification work," added the spokesman.
The re-rendering consists of dislodging the concrete surface and applying fresh concrete again.
These concrete surfaces face natural deterioration and wear over time.
The spokesman said that he had asked the contractor to increase the frequency of washing surfaces from once a month to once every fortnight in the meantime.
Chemicals will also be used to slow the growth of algae during rectification work.
