South Korean prosecutors have indicted 11 people for disclosing Samsung's OLED technology in China. These are employees of a supplier who apparently manufactured automated equipment used for the manufacture of OLED panels. They were indicted for disclosing Samsung Display's 3D laminating technology on curved OLED panels. Three of the 11 indicted have been arrested and are now awaiting trial. The list also includes the CEO of the company.
They would have created a shell company to which they would have sent the information received from their collaboration with Samsung regarding the equipment and the designs of the billboards. The trade secrets were then sold to an undisclosed Chinese buyer for about $ 14 million. Secondary names, phones and personal e-mail addresses were used to avoid getting caught even though they were violating a non-disclosure agreement signed with Samsung.
Samsung will not let go of that. The disclosed technology would have taken Samsung Display six years and millions of dollars to develop. The company had a team of 38 engineers working on it. Samsung's technology has been designated as a national core technology protected by South Korea's industrial technology protection laws.
Samsung Display said in a statement that it was "shocked by the results of the prosecutors' investigation, at a time when competitors were intensifying their technological rivalry". He will follow the trial closely.
