Dakar, Senegal

The number of Ebola victims in the Democratic Republic of Congo has risen to 522 since the beginning of the epidemic that erupted at the end of last July, said Friday the Ministry of Health.

According to the ministry, out of 932 reported cases of haemorrhagic fever, 867 were cases of Ebola.

Some 36 people continue to receive treatment for the disease, while 309 of them have recovered from the virus in this Central African country.

At least 65 people died from a haemorrhagic fever, but it was not possible to determine whether they had died of the Ebola virus because they had been buried without autopsy.

A total of 87,985 people received Ebola vaccines in the country as part of a campaign that began on August 8th.

Ebola – a tropical fever that appeared in Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1976 – can be transmitted to humans by wild animals.

It could also spread through contact with the body fluids of infected people or people who have succumbed to the virus.

The Ebola virus set off a global alarm in 2014 when the world's worst epidemic broke out in West Africa, killing more than 11,300 people and 28,600 people, while crossing Liberia, the United States. Guinea and Sierra Leone.
