SINGAPORE – The driver and cyclist involved in an altercation in Pasir Ris on Saturday (December 22nd) were arrested in connection with the case.
ST understands that the truck driver, 57, was arrested for reckless driving. The cyclist, 35, was arrested for reckless driving and mischief.
Meanwhile, a second video showing the consequences of the altercation became viral after its appearance on social networks Monday morning.
Shared on Roads.sg's Facebook page, he had collected approximately 281,000 views and 5,500 shares at 4:30 pm since it was posted around 10:20 am.
Monday's video shows a confrontation between three men – both cyclists and the truck driver – on a grass field, presumably near the scene of the original incident.
We see the truck driver holding his mobile phone and apparently filming or taking pictures of the two cyclists.
One of the cyclists picks up the phone before making several gestures to the truck driver. The phone is finally returned to the driver.
It is believed that the cyclist who picked up the phone is the one who hit and narrowed the exterior mirror of the truck. He was then knocked down by the heavy vehicle on Saturday.
The Straits Times had previously reported that the police had been alerted to the accident, which occurred at the intersection of Pasir Ris Drive 3 and Pasir Ris Rise, at 11:53.
The previous video, also published by Roads.sg, has recorded 2.1 million views since its posting the day of the incident.
The original video shows one of the cyclists rolling in the middle of the lane in front of the truck, causing the truck driver to honk him twice.
The cyclist stopped at the intersection in front of the truck and continued to obstruct the vehicle as he was moving away from the junction.
He then moved to the left of the lane, but hit the rearview mirror of the truck.
The truck driver then rode off the side of the cyclist, knocking him off the road and throwing him into the grass beside the road.
The driver of the truck, dubbed Mr. Zhang Shengzhong by Lianhe Wanbao, told the Chinese-language daily that he was trying to overtake the cyclists when he hit in his turn.
He claimed to have made a departure from the left on hearing a noise and thinking that he might have hit a taxi on his right.
He added that he did not know that videos of the incident had been filmed or that they had become viral.
"I had a new rear view mirror installed at a price of $ 15. When I got home, I told my wife about this incident, and I did not know it was would spark such a debate, "said the 57-year-old.
