SINGAPORE: An unemployed man slashed the cook with a knife and left a 4 cm long head wound after repeated requests for roti prata were refused.

Murugan Joseph, 45, was sentenced Friday, February 8 to 10 months and two weeks in prison, six canes and $ 3,000 after the attack.

He pled guilty to five counts, including intentionally wounded with a weapon, possessing a weapon, using insulting words, mischief and stealing. Three other charges were taken into account for sentencing.

The court heard Murugan and two friends, the unemployed Balachandran Kothandapani, 58, and Farizal Rahmat, 36, an occasional worker, often went to the stall called Habib's Express in a coffee shop at Clementi.

Last year, around 5:15 pm, Murugan and Balachandran returned to the 710 block shop, Clementi West Street 2, and ordered a roti prata.

When it was ready, the booth attendant asked the men to pay, but they did not have any money.

Furious that the assistant did not give them food because they did not have any money, Murugan and Balachandran confronted him aggressively for more than 10 minutes, said the Attorney General. Deputy Shenna Tjoa.

They left the stand when it became apparent that they were not getting roti prata, and Murugan threw the dishes for the dish before he left.

Cut the kitchen on his head

Murugan returned with his friend Farizal about 15 minutes later and asked for food at the booth assistant, but they were again rejected.

Back at the booth a third time, Murugan and his two friends asked for free food again. At this point, the cook, Revi Jose Vibin, 33 years old, intervened.

The three men lit it and Balachandran left the scene and came back with a 19.5 cm long knife, bought by Murugan a few weeks earlier.

Murugan took the knife and cut the cook on the left side of the head, leaving a 4 cm long V-shaped laceration.

He was taken to the hospital and watched, while the three men were arrested. A blood sample taken at Murugan showed that he was in a state of intoxication at the time of the attack.

The court heard that Murugan had drunk alcohol 10 days before the incident and called the police after losing track of the amount he had taken.

Last year, around 12:30 pm, Murugan phoned them to tell them, "I want the police to stop me .I have an alcohol problem."

When two officers arrived at his home and asked him what had happened, Murugan became aggressive and cursed them, shouting "either stop me or I take a knife".

The court also learned that on February 6 of last year, Murugan was arrested for stealing a bottle of water from a 7-Eleven store on West Coast Drive.

He went to the store around 1:30 am and tried to open the refrigerator door containing beer, but it was locked.

When Murugan shouted angrily at the cashier, claiming the drink, the cashier told her that she was not allowed to sell alcohol at that time.

He became more angry and launched vulgarities about the woman, who called the police when he brandished a pen on the counter.

Murugan broke a bottle of bird's nest on the floor next to the checkout counter and drank a bottle of mineral water before putting it back on the shelf.

The cases concerning his accomplices Balachandran and Farizal are pending in court.
