A man who abused his Vietnamese wife is imprisoned

SINGAPORE: A 47-year-old man who abused his Vietnamese wife, violating a personal protection order issued against him, was sentenced to two months and four weeks in prison on Tuesday, 27 November.

Seah Kian Beng admitted to slapping, slapping and strangling his 48-year-old wife, Truong Bich Hue, who is about four years old, who is moving to Singapore for a long-term pass.

He pleaded guilty to eight counts, including violations of the Women's Charter and willful injuries, and eight other counts were taken into account.

The abuse began on October 17, 2016, when Seah returned home to Bukit Batok one night. He began shouting and reprimanding his wife for no apparent reason, the prosecutor said.

Ms. Truong went to the empty bridge, followed by her husband, before running home to hide in her room.

In the room, Seah struck her right cheek with a punch and wrung her hand before pushing her and smothering her in her vise to prevent her from calling the police.

When he released his grip and left the room, Ms. Truong locked the door. She saw her husband outside with a penknife in his hand. He said in Mandarin: "I will kill you and throw you into the building."

Later that night, Ms. Truong filed a police report.

In April of this year, the couple had more fights, Seah pushing his wife into an argument over lunch once and pulling his hair on a fruit dispute over another.

Later in the month, Seah slapped his wife after drinking beer and arguing with her.

Shortly after, in May, Ms. Truong met her husband for grocery shopping but found that he was drunk. He tried to argue with her, but she ignored him.

However, after returning home, Seah shouted at his wife, growing angry when she refused him money for cigarettes.

He used his right shoulder to push her, making her fall, and then used her hands to push her again so that she fell again.

Ms. Truong again called the police to tell her that her husband was causing her trouble and refusing to allow her to bathe.

Deputy Attorney General Angela Ang requested a two-month and four-week prison sentence, noting that Seah had previously been sentenced for drunken driving and disorderly behavior.

Seah, who was not represented, said, through the intermediary of an interpreter in Mandarin, that he was very stressed at work because of a heavy financial burden.

He stated that he was working as a mechanical engineer and that he was facing a monthly loan with a "very high interest", adding that his apartment was in danger of being repossessed. .

He pleaded for leniency, saying that he had spoken to his wife – who was present in court – and she said that she was hoping for leniency as well as she feared that it would not be safe for her to be in the courthouse. apartment is not taken back.

District Judge Eddy Tham said he understood that there could be "life stressors" that could affect Seah's family. However, he added, combining alcohol and violence was "a recipe for disaster".

The court must protect spouses from violent behavior, he said.
