SINGAPORE: A professor at the National University of Singapore (NUS) who drove his Maserati against traffic was sentenced Monday (November 26th) to a fine of up to S $ 5,000 and a driving ban.

Henry Yeung Wai Chung, whose brief biography on the NUS website says he's a professor in the Department of Geography, pleaded guilty to a charge of dangerous driving.

District Judge Lorraine Ho banned Yeung, 50, from driving for 13 months.

The court heard that Yeung was traveling in the right lane of a two-lane road running along Lorong Chuan towards Braddell Road at around 1:15 pm on September 7 this year.

A white car ahead of him began to change lanes on the left, but instead of waiting for the end of the vehicle, Yeung lined it to the right.

To do this, he crossed the single continuous white line and engaged in the oncoming traffic on the opposite lane before returning to the right side of the road in front of the white car.

After that, Yeung went to a part of Lorong Chuan where the road became a three-lane road.

The driver of the truck, 59-year-old Sim Chin Huat, was driving in front of Yeung on the leftmost lane of the road, in a sequence captured in a viral video.

Mr. Sim changed his lane to get to the central lane, where Yeung was traveling.

Yeung drove at a rapid speed to try to overtake Mr. Sim on the right, climbing the sidewalk of the center divider and entering the lanes reserved for vehicles traveling in the opposite direction.

"At that moment, a taxi was driving in the opposite direction," said the prosecutor. "Fortunately, there was no collision."

Yeung rolled against the flow of traffic, crossing the double continuous white lines before stopping his car in front of Mr. Sim's truck.

Yeung damaged the left front end and the left front wheel of his car while climbing the sidewalk.

For dangerous driving, Yeung could have been sentenced to up to 12 months in jail, plus a fine.

In response to media inquiries, the NUS has stated that it expects all members of its community to behave in accordance with the law.

"NUS is currently reviewing the court's decision and will decide whether disciplinary proceedings will be instituted against Professor Henry Yeung," a NUS spokesman said.
