A 21-year-old model became the first Filipino to participate in the world's most-watched fashion show, the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, in New York on November 8th.
Kelsey Merritt, a graduate of AB Communications at Ateneo University in Manila, will become a Victoria's Secret model who will be watched by hundreds of millions of people around the world when the series airs Dec. 2.
"It sounds like a dream," she told Teen Vogue in an online interview. And a country obsessed with beauty pageants could not agree more.
Today, a Victoria 's Secret fashion show is undoubtedly more popular than beauty pageants. It is broadcast in more than 100 countries, especially among young people around the world who aspire to model the lean parts of this iconic lingerie brand.
Merritt will join the ranks of celebrities Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid.
Merritt, who was born in Pampanga Province and grew up in Manila, was also a model in the Inquirer ToBeYou section. She did a shoot for ToBeYou in Boracay, while she was a model of the local Bench brand, Kashieca.
Early on, she resolutely sought to become a model. In addition to ToBeYou, she toured for glamis and local billboards and paraded parades of benchmarks.
Before the show, she told Teen Vogue, "Making the show a dream come true, but being the first Filipina woman to join the series means I'm going to make the story." The series airs in more 190 countries with models from 20 countries, and I have been chosen to represent my region.
Nicole Thorp, her teammate at Ateneo, who also works for ToBeYou, described Merritt: "She is kind and hard-working and could reconcile her modeling jobs in New York and London."
"I'm just me"
Merritt's relay warms the Internet, with some netizens claiming that she's not a "pure Filipina" – her mother is Filipina, her American father – and she should not claim her feat as an Asian victory, because she is "white". "
Merritt, however, has a sensible and direct answer to that of Teen Vogue: "I would like to tell them that I am only me."
She posted on her Twitter account: "Pinanganak ako sa Pilipinas at lumaki ako sa Pampanga Tinapos ko ang Pag-aaral ko her Manila ao lumko was released in the US last year Hide colors ko kesa sa mga & # Pure; na hindi pa nakatapak sa [Pilipinas]. (I was born in the Philippines and grew up in Pampanga.I finished my studies in Manila before settling in the US last year.My blood is more Filipino than that of 'pure' Who have never walked on Filipino soil). I love my country and I am proud of my country of origin. "
Apparently, she has advocates, mostly students.
FIERCE
In a survey conducted by ToBeYou, Ira Patricia Pelayo, of the University of Santo Tomas (UST), said: "But what is the true Philippine beauty?" Although Kelsey Merritt has Eurocentric traits, she still embodies strong Filipino traits and fierce The fact that it is We should be proud of Filipino filiation because it represents us in the international modeling industry. "
Hasmin Sevilla, another student from the UST, added, "Her foreign appearance does not make her less Filipino. In addition to our blood, the content of our hearts is largely our heart." Her beauty and courage should make us all proud! "
