An original series and 8 original films, here’s what Netflix has planned for India

After the success of Lust Stories, Ghoul and Sacred Games, Netflix is gaining popularity in India with its indigenous content. At See What’s Next: Asia being held in Singapore, the company announced new titles and also released the trailer of Rishi Kapoor’s Netflix film Rajma Chawal along with releasing the teaser trailer of Selection Day, based on Aravind Adiga’s book of the same name.

Rajma Chawal starts streaming from November 30.

Selection Day, produced by Anil Kapoor Film Company and Seven Stories Ltd, is the story of two brothers who are brought up by a strict father. Selection Day starts streaming from December 28.

Netflix also announced a new original series, Typewriter. The horror series is about a haunted house and a haunted book and is set in Goa.

Netflix also announced eight new original Indian films.

Chopsticks starring Mithila Palkar, Abhay Deol and Vijay Raaz is about an underconfident girl who takes help from a conman to recover her stolen car from a Mumbai gangster. Chopsticks is produced by Ashvini Yardi of Vineyard Productions and directed by Sachin Yardi.

Bulbul, produced by Anushka Sharma’ Clean Slate Films, is a period film. The story is about Satya and his brother’s child bride Bulbul who formed a strong friendship as kids until he was sent to England. Upon his return, he finds that Bulbul was abandoned but now lives a life in the welfare of the people. But the village is plagued by a mysterious haunting woman and Satya must find out the truth.

Firebrand, produced by Priyanka Chopra, is a Marathi film that follows a lawyer, who was a sexual assault victim, as she deals with issues in her marriage. Directed by Aruna Raje, the film stars Usha Jadhav, Girish Kulkarni, Sachin Khedekar and Rajeshwari Sachdev.

15th August set in a Mumbai chawl is the story of a single day as the chawl prepares for the flag hoisting ceremony. The Marathi film is produced by Madhuri Dixit.

Cobalt Blue, the best-selling Marathi novel by Sachin Kundalkar, is the story of a brother and sister who both fall in love with same man. The story is set in a traditional Marathi household and will be directed by Sachin Kundalkar.

Hotel Mumbai, starring Dev Patel, Armie Hammer, Anupam Kher and Jason Isaacs, tells the true story of the survivors and victims of the attacks on Mumbai in 2008. This film will be available on Netflix in the SAARC region only.

Music Teacher, starring Manav Kaul, is a story about a music teacher who is emotionally troubled. He gets a chance to deal with his issues with an estranged student who is now a successful singer. The film is directed by Sarthak Dasgupta.

Upstarts is the story of three friends who are enchanted by the world of startups. In the struggle to make it big, they have to make big choices between their friendship and their dreams. Directed by Udai Singh Pawar, the film is produced by Raja Menon, Janani Ravichandran and Jawahar Sharma of Bandra West Productions.

The event also had announcements regarding the cast of the Baahubali prequel series, Baahubali: Before the Beginning. Mrunal Thakur, of Love Sonia fame, will play Sivagami and Rahul Bose will play Skandadasa. The cast also includes Atul Kulkarni, Vaquar Shaikh, Jameel Khan, Siddharth Arora and Anup Soni.

The Deepa Mehta dystopian fiction series Leila will feature Huma Qureshi in the title role and will also feature Siddharth Suryanarayan.
