Avengers: Infinity War had a truly sprawling cast.
With such a proliferation of heroes, it’s no wonder Thanos was inspired to wipe out half of existence.
Even with half of the Avengers gone, the upcoming instalment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is set to have an equally large roster of names.
Another name has been added to the list, and Doctor Strange fans are particularly excited…
Will Tilda Swinton play The Ancient One in Avengers 4?
Yes, but likely for nothing more than a cameo.
According to SuperBro Movies, Avengers executive producer Michael Grillo confirmed the inclusion of Tilda Swinton in Avengers 4.
She had presumably died in the first Doctor Strange movie.
However, given the extensive use of time travel and alternate dimensions, the probability of The Ancient One returning is pretty high.
AVENGERS 4 TEASER: WILL NEBULA TEAM UP WITH THIS SURPRISE HERO?
Grillo said: “When we got Tilda Swinton, she was just a one-day availability.”
This means it is highly unlikely Swinton would have time to do anything more than a cameo.
Swinton’s casting as the Ancient One in the Doctor Strange movie came with its own controversy.
Many fans accused Doctor Strange co-writer C. Robert Cargill and director Scott Derrickson of whitewashing the canonically Asian character.
AVENGERS 4: DOES THIS THEORY EXPLAIN HOW HEROES WILL BE RESURRECTED?
Derrickson explained his reasoning for casting Swinton.
“The Ancient One in the comics was a 1960s Western stereotypes perpetuating the old Fu Manchu mentor to the white hero.”
“What was I supposed to do with that?
“My first thought was to make the Ancient One a woman and middle-aged, not a fanboy’s dream girl.
But then it felt like it was falling into the Dragon Lady stereotype – the domineering mystical woman with a secret agenda.”
AVENGERS 4: WILL THIS SHOCK CHARACTER APPEAR IN AVENGERS 4?
He added: “I wasn’t going to perpetuate that stereotype.
Derrickson continued: “Asians have been whitewashed and stereotyped in American cinema for over a century and people should be mad or nothing will change.
“What I did was the lesser of two evils, but it is still an evil.”
With Swinton appearing in Avengers 4, the debate may come into the spotlight once again.
Swinton is a venerated actress, and her cameo in Avengers 4 will likely excite fans.
Avengers 4 is out in cinemas on April 26, 2019.
