Children victims of food poisoning after lunch at a summer camp have recovered and returned to school

SINGAPORE – Some children who were intoxicated by food while they were participating in a summer camp have recovered and returned to school.

A total of 131 people became ill Monday, November 26 after eating packed lunches prepared by FoodTalks Catering & Manufacturer, located at Shimei East Kitchen in Bedok.

The Straits Times understands that they received packets of fried macaroni.

Of those affected, 115 were children and 16 were teachers. The Ministry of Health has announced that no other cases of gastroenteritis have been reported on Wednesday.

Those who became ill attended a Primary Learning Pass 1 camp organized by Learning Horizon for six-year-olds. Learning Horizon is part of the Busy Bees Asia group, which runs several preschool channels, including Small Wonder, Pat's Schoolhouse and Brighton Montessori.

Parents who spoke to The Straits Times stated that the children attending the camp came from several schools in Busy Bees Asia.

In an email sent to parents, a Learning Horizon spokesperson said that "more than 60 children and teachers" had vomited on Monday. The camp, originally scheduled for Monday to Wednesday, was suspended "with immediate effect". A full refund will be given to parents.

Busy Bees Asia's director of operations and curriculum, Ronald Kwong, said the company was working with the authorities to determine the cause of the food poisoning. "All those affected received the necessary medical care and none of our students or teachers had to be admitted to the hospital and (all) were released in the same day," he said.

On Tuesday, the Ministry of Health, the National Agency for the Environment and the Food and Veterinary Authority announced in a statement that they were investigating an outbreak of gastroenteritis attributable to the food consumption prepared by FoodTalks Caterer & Manufacturer.

Food handlers were sent for stool screening and food and environmental samples were collected for analysis.

FoodTalks declined to comment when contacted. According to its website, it was created in 2004 and offers catering services for business and private meetings, as well as package meals for school camps and corporate lunches.

Among those affected was the daughter of six-year-old Diyana Sudarsono, who had attended the Small Wonder preschool in Sengkang.

Sudarsono, 32, said her daughter did not feel well after eating fried macaroni for lunch. "She was very lucky, she had some abdominal cramps in the evening and the school told us to take her to a doctor," she said.

His daughter was well enough to return to school on Tuesday, but some of her friends had more serious symptoms.

Another parent, who wants to be identified only as Alice, said that her son's friends became ill after eating the packaged food provided.

"His friends had liquid stools after eating packaged food, but they were able to go to school today," said Wednesday at the age of 37.

A kindergarten teacher who also participated in the camp said that the children at her center had largely recovered and that a large number of them returned to school. Tuesday. She refused to be named.
