OOn Tuesday, sentences were finally passed against those involved in the mega scandal of abuses committed last year in a Shanghai daycare run by the travel giant Ctrip.

The scandal came last November after Chinese social media published surveillance video clips of a worker abusing infants at daycare. In a clip, we see the worker forcefully tearing a school bag from a little girl before pushing her and watching her stumble back and hit her head on a table.

Another clip showed the same staff member giving a crying child something with a tube. The parents later discovered that the substance was wasabi.

Other video clips showed furious parents giving the worker a taste of her own medication, forcing her to feed her wasabi on stage at the daycare after she tried desperately to get her on her own. excuse, prostrating and crying, but to no avail.

The clips quickly became viral, arousing the outrage of Chinese social media. Soon the daycare was closed and some staff were in custody. The center was located inside Ctrip's headquarters in Shanghai and was established in 2016 for the company's employees. However, it was operated by a third party service provider.

On Tuesday, eight people were sentenced to prison for the scandal by a Changning District Court in Shanghai. The director of the daycare was sentenced to the most severe sentence of 18 months in prison. Others were sentenced to prison terms ranging from one year to 14 months.

The principal and two others will be banned from working with children for five years, while the rest of the convicted will also be prohibited during their probationary period of up to 18 months.

The staining of wasabi on the mouth and hands of the children was a common form of punishment at the daycare, sanctioned by the principal to "teach the children a lesson". Prosecutors said the principal had even advised his staff to punish them out of the surveillance camera's field of vision.

Unfortunately for her, a worker did not consider this advice.
