SINGAPORE: The first week of the New Year is expected to be hot and windy, with intermittent showers lasting three to four days, the Singapore Meteorological Service (MSS) announced on Monday (December 31st).

More showers are expected towards the end of the first week of January 2019, he added.

The first two weeks of the month, MSS predicts six to eight days of short thunderstorms, mostly in the afternoon.

"Rainfall for the first half of January 2019 should be near normal," said the service.

The daily temperature can reach 34 degrees Celsius on days with little rain. It is expected that it oscillates between 24 and 33 degrees Celsius most days.

In December, the highest daily total precipitation, 97.3 mm, was recorded at Yio Chu Kang on 20 December.

Severe thunderstorms caused gusts of wind that killed trees in Sembawang Park.

That day, a seaweed – resulting from violent storms over the sea southeast of East Coast Park – was also observed at various locations in Singapore, said MSS.
