Retired goalkeeper thinks cutters are finally getting the fees they deserve in the transfer market
Edwin van der Sar, former goalkeeper of the Netherlands and Manchester United, is satisfied with the recent evolution of the goalkeepers and the record fees paid to them.
The Premier League teams, Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea, have all set the record fees of a goalkeeper in the last 14 months.
City were the first to break the record when they paid $ 45 million to Benfica for Ederson in June 2017. Liverpool broke the deadlock in the last transfer slot by making $ 84 million for Alisson, but a little less than a month later, Chelsea set a new record pay Athletic Bilbao $ 91 million for Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Van der Sar, who was the keeper of the ball game in his day, believes that the role of the goalkeepers has been recently reshaped and that the distribution – that the three of the above-mentioned record holders are the masters – has seen them award a note as high as any other field position and heavy price tags reflect the modern requirements of the game.
"I think that, on one side, we have to understand that the goalkeeper is an art but also a very important position to occupy in your club," said Van der Sar. Goal

"But the level goes up and the type of goalkeeper is not just about short stops, but also a breakdown and a help to the team.
"It was part of my game and I'm happy to see it's getting longer and progressing along the way."
In 2016, five years after his retirement, 45-year-old van der Sar returned to professional football to help his troubled childhood club, VV Noordwijk, during a period of injury. He played a match, spared a penalty for allowing them to draw 1-1 against the Dutch fourth-ranked Jodan Boys and quickly retired.
