Face to face of the 2018 Suzuki AFF Cup: Thailand vs Malaysia

With the 2018 Suzuki AFF Cup now in its round of 16, fans are preparing for exciting clashes while there remain four teams.

Vietnam and the Philippines face off in a semi-final, but the subject of the day is Thailand, the reigning champion, who is fighting a hungry Malaysia.

The first leg will be played at Bukit Jalil National Stadium in Kuala Lumpur, while the Thais will host the second leg at Rajamangala National Stadium in Bangkok.

1996 Group Stage – Thailand 1 – 1 Malaysia

Group Stage 2002 – Malaysia 3 – 1 Thailand

Sarayuth Chaikamdee opened the scoring for the match and gave the Thais the advantage in the 45th minute, but they could not stop Malaysia in the second half. Muhamad Khalid scored two goals in two minutes to give the hosts the lead and ultimately the win.

Malaysia would finish second in the group while Thailand failed to qualify for the semi-finals.

Group Stage 2007 – Thailand 1 to 0 Malaysia

In the final game of the group stage, Thailand and Malaysia battled over who would win the group, with both teams having four points.

Playing at Bangkok's Suphachalasai Stadium, the Thais had the advantage thanks to Sarayuth's goal in the 48th minute, which was the decisive goal of the match. Thailand would continue and win the group but both would advance to the next round.

Group Stage 2008 – Thailand 3 – 0 Malaysia

Another battle of the group stage was between the two teams and Thailand was dominant before winning 3-0.

The goals of Sutee Suksomkit and Teerasil Dangda led them 3-0, impressive throughout the campaign.

Malaysia would fail to move to the next round after winning only one of its three events in the group stage.

Group Stage 2010 – Thailand 0 – 0 Malaysia

In a tense affair, neither nation scored a goal in its 0-0 draw as it contested its group stage in Indonesia.

Malaysia would do just enough to finish second in the group but improve in the round of 16 when they finally get their first title of champion of the FIFA Suzuki Cup.

Meanwhile, Thailand had a bad exit as they did not progress in the group stages.

Semi-final 2012 – Thailand 3 – 1 Malaysia (total)

After winning group A, Thailand faced Malaysia, second in group B, in the semifinals.

In the first leg, both teams settled for a 1-1 draw at Bukit Jalil. Norshahrul Idlan and Teerasil's goals were canceled and qualified for a tense second leg in Bangkok.

However, the Thais were impressive in their home game by beating the Malaysians 2-0 behind the goals of Teerasil and Theeraton Bunmathan, which marked the difference tied.

Group Stage 2014 – Malaysia 2 – 3 Thailand

In a very exciting match, Thailand collected the most points against Malaysia in the group stage thanks to a last-minute winner of the War Elephants.

Malaysia scored with a goal from Mohd Amri, but Adisak Kraisorn was able to level his account in the 43rd minute.

Safiq Rahim restored the advantage to the Malaysians in the second half, but Charyl Yannis Chappuis equalized again for the Thais before Adisak scored in the 90th minute to give them the win.

Finals 2014 – Thailand 4 – 3 Malaysia (total)

The two teams face off again in the AFF's Suzuki Cup, this time in the final and Thailand wins the first leg of their match at 2-0 behind goals from Charyl and Kroekrit Thawikan.

With a comfortable lead, the Thais were in shock during their away match as Malaysia stormed Indra Putra and Safiq's goals to give Malaysians an overall 3- lead. 2.

Unfortunately for them, the Thais had too much firepower and two goals in five minutes gave them the necessary goals to win the overall 4-3 win. Charyl and Chanathip Songkrasin were the goal providers who helped Thailand to win.
