MILAN (AFP) – Former Juventus striker and Chelsea striker Gianluca Vialli revealed on Monday that he has been battling cancer for a year.
The 54-year-old Vialli, who also scored 16 goals in 59 games for Italy and is now part of the popular TV media, told Italian daily Corriere della Sera that he hopes his story "would inspire people".
"I'm fine now, very well," said Vialli, who has won many trophies during his short career as a player, including in the Champions League with Juventus and two Serie A titles.
"It's been a year and I have become a beastly physique again, although I'm still not sure of the end of this game."
"I wore a sweater under my shirt so no one noticed anything, I'm still the person everyone knew."
Vialli has just published its second book, Objectives, 98 stories +1 to face the most difficult challenges.
"I hope my story will inspire people who are at crucial intersections of their lives." I hope mine will be a book to keep on the nightstand so people can read one or two stories before you fall asleep or in the morning as soon as they wake up, "he says.
Another key phrase that appeared during my treatment, hanging on a yellow post-it on the wall, was: "We are the product of our thoughts".
"The important thing is not to win; it's thinking like a winner. Life is composed of 10% for what happens to us and 90% for the way we handle the situation.
"I hope my story can help others manage what's going on in the right way."
From Cremona, in the north of Italy, Vialli began his career with local club Cremonese in the early 1980s before winning top honors with the best Italian teams, Sampdoria and Juventus.
Vialli spent most of his career at Sampdoria, where he won his first title in Serie A, the Cup Winners Cup and three Cups of Italy.
He joined Juve in 1992 and played for the Turin giants for four seasons, helping them to win the league in 1995 and the Champions League the following season, before moving to Chelsea, the English Premier League club.
After winning the FA Cup in 1997, Chelsea's first major honor in 26 years, he became the Blues coaching player towards the end of the following season, when he won both the Winners' Cup and the Cup and League Cup. He also won the FA Cup as permanent manager in 2000.
He left the club in September 2000 after holding his last management position in Watford, where he was sacked in 2002 after a year.
