LG Launches Second Generation Alpha 9 Processor for 2019 OLED Televisions

LG will introduce an upgraded version of its "Alpha 9" video processor on the OLED 2019 TVs. The company says the second-generation version will support next-generation "High Frequency High Frequency (HFR) content," but that first generation version already does it.

It is not uncommon for TV makers to use the same video processor for a few years until a significant upgrade is ready. LG has already done so in the past. But with the 2018 lineup, the company has taken a big step forward with the introduction of the Alpha 9 processor on the C8, E8, G8 and W8 OLED TVs.

The LG 2019 OLED TVs will feature an upgraded 2nd generation Alpha 9 processor, announces the company in a press release. The proposed enhancements are unclear, but LG took the opportunity to highlight HFR video content – or high frame rate – of up to 120 frames per second. The OLED 2018 models already support the HFR at 120 frames per second, but it is limited to streaming applications. The big question is of course whether LG will equip its TVs with HDMI 2.1.

– "With the impressive new integrated image processor, the LG 2019 OLED TVs will offer a truly unparalleled viewing experience," the company said. "The α9 Gen 2 is ready to support next generation HFR (High Frame Rate) content, mastered at an astonishing 120 frames per second (fps) speed. A higher frame rate means better fast action rendering with a noticeably smoother motion and better picture clarity – ideal for watching sports or the latest blockbusters. "

No other specificity regarding the 2019 OLED models has been shared. The rumor has been rather quiet this fall and it is still unclear whether LG.Display – LG's screen production division – will switch to OLED maximum-emission panels this year. We do not suspect that the company is committed to increasing production.

However, we know that LG is planning to launch its first 8K OLED TV (88 inches) next year. It is also said that the company would debut Rollable OLED TV. The 2019 program will be unveiled at CES 2019 in January.
