- Lincoln unveiled its new three-row Aviator SUV at the Los Angeles Auto Show.
- The crossover SUV will be located between the smaller Nautilus and the life-size Navigator of the Lincoln range.
- A robust 400 horsepower V6 and an even more powerful 450 horsepower hybrid are on order.
The big four-door luxury car is disappearing, but will be replaced by SUVs.
It's an industry-wide trend, and Lincoln, Ford's revitalized luxury brand, is in the middle. Lincoln has launched a new full-size SUV Navigator for the 2018 model year, as well as a mid-sized mid-size vehicle for five passengers in the Nautilus, also available for sale.
The Aviator, an intermediate three-row crossover to be unveiled Wednesday at the Los Angeles Auto Show, will join this lineup. The name echoes an SUV sold by Lincoln in the mid-2000s.

"Aviator represents the best of our brand's DNA and indicates the direction for Lincoln vehicles," said Lincoln President Joy Falotico in a statement. "It offers elegance, effortless performance and unparalleled comfort – a faithful representation of Lincoln's vision for the future."
The crossover will be available with a 3.0-liter V6 with two turbochargers and a ten-speed automatic transmission or a gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain in the Grand Touring version; the first will serve up to 400 horses, and the last will go to 450 horses.
According to Lincoln, the Aviator's digital dashboard will combine the minimalist design Lincoln has deployed in its new models with the ability to monitor various training modes.
"In addition to Lincoln's five signature settings – Normal, Conservative, Excite, Slippery and Deep – two new modes are specifically designed for the Aviator Grand Touring," said the automaker in a statement. "These Pure EV and Preserve EV modes allow customers to choose when and how to best use their electrical power, while the enhanced Excite mode maximizes performance."

Lincoln combined nautical and aeronautical themes in his new crossovers, with the Aviator focusing on the air side of the equation.
"The connotations of flight are intrinsic to the lines of the vehicle," said David Woodhouse, director of brand design, in a statement.
Several design themes available have been combined with a series of embedded technologies that strive to be more discreet and elegant than those that consumers might find at other luxury brands. The Aviator is also equipped with advanced driver safety and assistance features, known collectively as the Lincoln Co-Pilot360. Owners can benefit from an adaptive cruise control for parked vehicles at a stop, as well as an anti collision technology and parking assistance.
Another trend that arises in the industry, the Aviator also allows drivers to dispense with their keychain and use a smartphone to operate the SUV.
The Aviator will go on sale for the 2020 model year; Lincoln has not announced a price, but it will be between the Nautilus and the Navigator, replacing the current MKT crossover, which costs around $ 50,000.
