SINGAPORE: A man has been fined 8,000 Singapore dollars for attempting to withdraw more than 460,000 Singaporean dollars from Singapore earlier this month, police said in a press release on Thursday (November 29th).

On November 3, 27-year-old Charles Phillip Santharasegaran was at Changi Airport Terminal 1 on a flight to Papua New Guinea after being checked by a screening officer.

His hand luggage contained stacks of dollars from Singapore, the United States and Australia rising to over $ 460,000.

Under the laws of Singapore, anyone who attempts to bring in or out of the country more than 20,000 Singapore dollars, or the equivalent in foreign currency, is required to report it to an immigration officer.

On November 22, Santharasegaran was found guilty and fined Singapore $ 8,000 for failing to report the movements of money.

He could have been fined up to S $ 50,000 or imprisonment for up to three years, or both.
