SINGAPORE – A man was injured in the spine after being hit by a strip of plaster falling in front of a boutique hotel in Little India.
The Straits Times learned that the 35-year-old Malaysian was sitting on a ledge near the bridge in front of the Wanderlust Hotel when he was hit Tuesday night (27 November).
Singapore Civil Defense Forces reported receiving a call for medical assistance at the Dickson Road Hotel at 23:40. The victim, a cafe cook named ABC Nasir Kandar located next to the hotel, was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital.
The videos posted on Facebook show large pieces of plaster on the floor next to the man. According to the video, the man seems to be suffering and a group of passersby trying to calm him before the arrival of the paramedics.
The Building and Construction Authority (BCA) reported that a plaster architectural strip, estimated at 4mx 0.3m, fell from the second floor of the building.
"As an immediate precaution, the affected area located just below, where the architectural element fell off the building, and other parts of the façade with the similar element were cordoned off," said a spokesman for BCA.
BCA has asked the building owner to appoint an engineer to investigate the cause of the incident. The hotel was also instructed to inspect the condition of the rest of the building facade and to carry out the permanent grinding work recommended by the engineer.
When ST went on site Wednesday, an area in front of the hotel was cordoned off. The plaster band next to a hotel sign has not been replaced.
The victim started working at the ABC Nasir Kandar café right next to the hotel just two weeks ago, according to a coffee assistant.
"He was always watching when I was working around 7pm. I hope he's recovering well, "said the assistant, who only wanted to be known as Miss Zhang.
