SINGAPORE: Needy Singaporeans received nearly $ 150 million from the Medical Endowment Fund (MediFund) last fiscal year, the Ministry of Health announced on Thursday (November 29th).

MediFund provided a total of 149.8 million Singaporean dollars to approximately 1.18 million requests for assistance for health care bills during the 2017 fiscal year, from April 1, 2017 to March 31 2018.

"MediFund ensures that no Singaporean is denied proper medical care because of its inability to pay," said the Ministry of Health.

The amount disbursed last year was slightly higher than the amount of 143.9 million Singaporean dollars paid the previous year. The number of applications approved by MediFund has also increased by 3.8%, compared to about 1.14 million in fiscal 2016.

On average, the amount of assistance provided by MediFund was S $ 953 per hospital treatment and S $ 85 per outpatient treatment, the Ministry of Health said.
