In a Facebook post while he was commenting on the decision of the Terengganu government, led by PAS, to impose sharia-compliant clothing for their athletes starting next year, Syed Saddiq has stated that he had been personally contacted by certain athletes and that it was his duty to defend them. .
"Sport is for everyone and our athletes are our heroes and heroines. Some athletes have personally contacted me about it. I have to defend them because they are the assets of the nation, "said Syed Saddiq.
He said the decision of the Terengganu government was alarming because the future of sports such as gymnastics, diving, swimming and bodybuilding would be affected.
He added that many Muslim athletes have brought glory to the country, such as Farah Ann Hadi (gymnastics), Nur Dhabitah Sabri (diving) and Sazali Samad (bodybuilder).
They had competed at the Commonwealth, Olympic, ASEAN and ASP levels and had been podium finishes.
Syed Saddiq also cited the example of Azizul Hasni Awang, world famous cycling world champion, originally from Terengganu, who had achieved international fame regardless of the outfit he wore.
"I'll be around everyone, no matter what their outfits. I am here because of them. Please, leave them alone, "added Syed Saddiq.
Yesterday, Wan Sukairi Wan Abdullah, chairman of the Committee for the Development of Youth, Sports and Non-Governmental Organizations of Terengganu State, said that the decision to adopt Shari'a-compliant garments was consistent with the state government's policy of making Islam the main pillar of the administration, including in terms of sport.
He added that for starters, all Muslim football players under the Terengganu State Football Federation were required to wear sharia-compliant attire at all tournaments, both indoor and outdoor. outside the state, starting next season.
