Ashley Cole was released by the LA Galaxy when the club opted out of the defender's contract as part of its year-end lineup changes.
Cole, one of eight players released by the club, joined the Galaxy in 2016 and has played 83 regular season appearances with the MLS team.
The former star of Chelsea and Arsenal won 107 selections for England between 2001 and 2014.
The defender had a base salary of $ 422,000 (£ 329,000) and a total pay of $ 722,500 (£ 564,042), making him the second-best-paid defender of a team that conceded 64 goals before missing the playoffs.
Cole was largely the highlight of this defense, but with the 37-year-old backstroke, the club will take a new direction.
The former English star is not the only defender to leave the club. Michael Ciani and Rolf Feltscher also saw the options drop as the Galaxy moved from three of the top four paid members of the bottom line.
Goaltender Brian Sylvestre, forward Ariel Lassiter, defenseman Sheanon Williams, midfielder Baggio Husidic and midfielder Servando Carrasco have also seen their options decline, while midfielder Chris Pontius, defenseman Dave Romney and midfielder Emmanuel Boateng remain in negotiations with the club.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is one of 16 players under contract with the club. Ibrahimovic has been associated with a move with AC Milan in recent weeks after scoring 22 goals in 27 games in his MLS debut.
The Swiss star defeated Wayne Rooney as a newcomer of the year, while winning the goal of the season for his first goal against Los Angeles FC.
The Galaxy had a chance to extend this season on the final day of the regular season game, but collapsed against Houston Dynamo by losing a 2-0 lead en route to a late-season loss that saw put the team out of the post-season.
