Former Manchester United boss David Moyes said he had a commitment from Toni Kroos before his transfer to Real Madrid.
Kroos was at Bayern Munich at that time and would later go to Real Madrid after meeting Moyes to discuss the move at Old Trafford.
"Toni Kroos had agreed to come to Manchester United with me," Moyes said at talkSPORT.
"I met him with his wife and we agreed on everything when he was at Bayern Munich."
Moyes also missed Gareth Bale, Cesc Fabregas and Leighton Baines in the same summer.
He added: "Go to a club like Manchester United and follow someone like Sir Alex after his stay there, stay ten months …
"It could not be a revolution at Manchester United, it had to be an evolution. It must have taken some time.
"I still think that they have hard times right now."
