The former Red Devils midfielder is not convinced that a current club official is the right long-term option for Old Trafford
Manchester United's inability to find a qualified coach is "embarrassing," says Ince. The club must avoid the mistakes of David Moyes and Jose Mourinho when assessing the claims of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Filling the skin of Sir Alex Ferguson as a result of his retirement, in 2013, was always going to be an almost impossible job for those of Old Trafford.
United is however in his fifth coach – permanent and acting – since a Scottish emblem has moved away from the canoe.
Moyes, Ryan Giggs, Louis van Gaal, Mourinho and Solskjaer all took the reins in order to bring the glory days back to a club so used to major honors.
There have been some successes, while the man currently at the helm has collected eight wins over an undefeated start of nine games, but Ince believes that the next permanent appointment to the leadership must be taken into account.
The former midfielder of the United Nations said Paddy Power"People are getting ahead by suggesting that Solskjaer be appointed permanent director. The match against Burnley [a 2-2 draw], although he came back, proved that the team was not there yet. I'm not saying he did not do well, he was fantastic, but that does not mean he's ready for the job.
"You must be careful. Anyone who holds the position on a permanent basis must be the man of choice.
"It's more and more embarrassing, United went through David Moyes, Louis Van Gaal and then the fans were convinced that Mourinho was the good man, and it's quite clear that this was not the case.
"United lost time with Mourinho, they won two trophies but eventually he took them one step further.
"What the club can not do is give it to Solskjaer for a year, realize that it was not what they thought and send another manager – I can see it come true.
"Whatever the next manager, be it him or Mauricio Pochettino, he has to be there for the long run."
Ince thinks that Solskjaer, although he has not yet suffered a defeat, has made "weird" decisions and must be content with a privileged XI to become a serious contender for a full-time position.
The former England international added: "Ole Gunnar Solskjaer recently said he wanted to see how his Man United team would react if they scored a goal.
"I'm not sure it was part of the plan to beat Burnley to two, but it was a shining sign that his players were determined to score a goal, and that showed a real change in attitude from Jose Mourinho.
"This is not the best result of Ole as a manager. The fact is, you still should not score two home goals against Burnley. But it was good to find the fighting spirit.

"I do not know why he's constantly changing teams. There must be consistency in the team, and when they play so well by the minute, I'm not sure of the need to keep doing things wrong.
"The decision that he made to start Andreas Pereira was weird, then he found himself at fault for a goal.
"There must be some consistency."
