This is not the first time that a national costume of Miss Universe Singapore is receiving negative reactions.
The previous costumes, inspired by all Singaporeans, from the Merlion to the Vanda Miss Joaquim Orchid, were decorated for their superb designs.
A fashion designer with more than 10 years of experience in the industry, who declined to give his name, said about this year's theme: "I think he was chosen for his sensational character." is controversial and the international press is more likely to pick up on it.

The local YouTuber Preeti Nair, better known as Preetipls, has released an image of herself dressed in photoshopping in the dress. The skirt has been modified to reflect the many news stories in Singapore this year.
Another image shows that the photoshopped skirt looks like a half-durian. Pizza and croissants were among the other foods on the skirt.
The designs that attract attention, however, are identical during the course in the Miss Universe national costume segment.
