PSG 2-1 Liverpool: "They made us look like butchers!" – Jurgen Klopp launches "unprepared" referee

The Reds have collected six yellow cards in their defeat at the Parc des Princes, while their manager was dissatisfied with the level of arbitration.

Jurgen Klopp lashed out at referee Szymon Marciniak after the Liverpool Champions League was suspended after a loss to Paris St Germain.

The Reds lost 2-1 in the French capital and have to beat Napoli at Anfield – either 1-0 or two draws – in their last Group C game to advance to the round of 16.

His team was outclassed for parts of the contest, but Klopp 's post – match interviews angered mainly focused on the performance of the official.

The Pole issued six yellow cards to Liverpool and two to PSG – one of them, for Marco Veratti 's fault on Joe Gomez, whose boss was categorical should have been a red.

And the German was even more upset by the apparent uncertainty of the referee as to the award of the Liverpool penalty by James Milner, the assistant referee influencing the decision.

"We have six, seven, eight yellow cards and we were close to a red card.

"Yes, there were one or two things that were yellow cards, but all the others – that's amazing.

"We had a penalty and the referee did not want to give it but I do not know how it is possible.

"The referee needs to be prepared for such a game and he has not seemed ready.

"But they scored two and we did not [got] a so it is our fault. "

He continued on the same theme during his press conference, adding: "It was a red for me, clearly Veratti, I saw it very well and it is sure that it was not the same color map than the 500 we got tonight. "

When asked if PSG star Neymar had apparently influenced the leader, Klopp said, "It's not up to me to talk about Neymar."

And he added to the interviewer: "Ask the referee. You can. Try."

Despite his anger, Klopp said his team remained confident of reaching the round of 16 before a decisive test against Napoli.

"Napoli is incredibly strong and we have to win by two goals, which is not an easy task but we will have Anfield at the back and we still believe in it," he said.

"We are scattered, that's for sure, but we will have to be there."

Liverpool will return to play Sunday by hosting Everton in the season's first derby, Merseyside.
