Former Liverpool striker Robbie Keane has announced his retirement from football.

The 38-year-old confirmed his decision Wednesday after being appointed assistant coach of the new Republic of Ireland director, Mick McCarthy, last week.

Keane joined the Tottenham Hotspur Reds in the summer of 2008 and scored seven goals in 28 appearances alongside Rafael Benitez.

His first goal was a Champions League match against PSV Eindhoven before qualifying for the matches of Atletico Madrid and Arsenal, as well as for the double of Anfield, ahead of West Bromwich Albion and Bolton Wanderers.

Keane's charm with Liverpool, however, was short-lived – an agreement was reached for his return to the Spurs in the middle of the 2008-09 campaign.

Previously, he had also represented Wolverhampton Wanderers, Coventry City, Inter Milan and Leeds United, before playing for Celtic, West Ham United, Los Angeles Galaxy, Aston Villa and the United States. ATK.

Keane is the scorer in the history of the Republic of Ireland with 68 goals.
