SINGAPORE – Passengers on a Scoot flight to Singapore had to wait nearly 30 hours in Tokyo and Bangkok on Monday (26 November) due to a technical problem with the aircraft.
A spokesman for the low-cost company told the Straits Times on Tuesday that flight TR869 was due to leave Tokyo for Singapore with a stopover at Bangkok's Don Mueang International Airport at 9:35 am local time.
But a technical problem forced the plane to return to Narita International Airport.
"The engineers immediately began the rectification work, but given the time required, it was decided to land the plane," the spokesman said.
The passengers were informed that the flight from Tokyo would be postponed to Tuesday at 15:50 local time, while those bound for Bangkok would leave at 22:10 local time.
Facebook's user, Jie Vonn Memories, said Monday in a message posted on Scoot's Facebook page that she was stranded in Bangkok and that she was facing a "horrendous delay" of 30 hours.
Scoot spokesman said he had tried to transfer some affected passengers on another flight, the TR899, which was headed from Japan to Singapore via Taipei.
To ensure that customers assigned to Bangkok can return to Singapore as quickly as possible, Scoot announced that an additional flight, the TR8869, was to leave Bangkok at 17:10 local time.
Some customers will also be transferred to TR611, which will depart at 18:15 local time. A larger plane with more seats would be used for this flight.
Those who could not fly from Tokyo or Bangkok were accommodated and fed, if necessary, added the spokesman.
"Safety is our top priority and we sincerely apologize for the disruption to our customers' travel plans."
This is the second flight delay reported by the airline in two days.
On Sunday, a Scoot flight to Bangkok was delayed by almost seven hours due to a technical problem with the plane.
Flight TR616 was to leave Terminal 2 at Changi Airport at 5:30 pm, but took off only at 12:28 pm, after the transfer of passengers to a replacement aircraft.
As a result, the Bangkok-Singapore return flight was also delayed by about six hours.
