A new spin-off of Marvel's Black Panther cartoon will be a family affair: New comics will focus on Shuri, sister of the hero and ruler of the fictional African nation of Wakanda. It will begin in October and will be written by Nnedi Okorafor, a fantasy and sci-fi author, and drawn by Leonardo Romero . Shuri's character was created in a Black Panther comic in 2005, but his rendition in the film " Black Panther", directed by Ryan Coogler, has attracted new attention. – and dozens of fans – to the character, who is a scientific genius who provides his brother with gadgets and sass. In May, a new series of Black Panther, written by Ta-Nehisi Coates and drawn by Daniel Acuña saw the title hero venturing into space, leaving the nation of Wakanda without a leader. In the Shuri series, his sister will ascend the throne and rule in his absence.
The fallout from the Black Panther series, which Mr. Coates began writing in April 2016, has had limited success. Last year, Black Panther and the Crew, which began in April and was written by Mr. Coates and the poet Yona Harvey, lasted only six issues. Another fallout, World of Wakanda, which was written by Ms. Harvey and the feminist writer Roxane Gay, and which began in December 2016, also lasted only six issues.
Okorafor is no stranger to the world of Black Panther. In December, she wrote a bi-weekly series of six issues, Black Panther: Vive le roi, with works by André Lima Araújo on a monster terrorizing Wakanda. A review of the first issue on the Black Nerd Problems website gave him 8.4 out of 10 Simbas.
