PARIS • A letter written by the French poet Charles Baudelaire in the 19th century announcing his intention to kill himself was sold Sunday at the auction at € 234,000 ($ 367,000), three times the expected price.

Best known for his collection of poems Les Fleurs Du Mal, Baudelaire was 24 years old when he wrote the letter to his mistress Jeanne Duval in June 1845.

It was bought by a private collector, said Osenat auction house.

The British Daily Mirror UK understands that there was an auction war between the buyer and another person before the letter was finally sold. The buyer was not present at the auction.

"When you receive this letter, I will be dead … I kill myself because I can not continue to live, I can not stand the test of falling asleep or waking up again," wrote Baudelaire.

The poet was stabbed, but suffered no serious damage and lived for 22 years. He died at the age of 46 in 1867.
