Facebook user Claris Ortega last week shared an experience she had at the Clementi Food Center that would have melted anyone's heart.
While Mrs. Ortega was at the food court, she saw an elderly lady "pushing a cart of folded cardboard cartons using a raffia rope as a belt" that went up to the next hungry looking table at the leftover plaques left behind. by previous customers. .
She describes the woman walking away before turning around. Ms. Ortega approached her and before she could say anything, the woman asked her if she could buy him a packet of chicken rice. Mrs. Ortega offered to buy her two packages, but the woman refused, insisting that she needed only one.
At the end of her message, Ms. Ortega writes, "This meeting really broke my heart. The reason I wrote this article is not to boast of having helped or whatever. But I really hope that reminds all who read the true meaning of humanity. And the importance of having compassion for another living being.
She ends with a call to anyone in the central area of Clementi to help buy a meal for this woman if she sees her there.

A few days later, the Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) thanks Mr. Ortega for his kindness and thanks members of the public for their offers of assistance to the elderly woman.
MSF added that its social service office (SSO) and local community groups were in contact with the woman whom they have referred to as Mrs. Tan and her family for some time now.
Apparently, Ms. Tan is the only owner of an HDB apartment where she lives with some of her children. MSF stated that Ms. Tan was cared for and supported by her children and grandchildren and was also receiving a pension and payments under the Silver Support Scheme. They added that they would continue to reach out to Ms. Tan and her family to provide the necessary support.
Note that MSF did not immediately state that Mdm Tan did not need help in any form whatsoever, but to give the impression that she is autonomous.
