John Toshack says the future of Jurgen Klopp in Liverpool can only be guaranteed if he wins a trophy this season.

Klopp directed Liverpool in the Champions League final last season, and the Reds continued this momentum by making their best start to the Premier League season with 33 points in 13 games.

But Klopp did not manage to win a trophy in three years at Anfield – and the former Liverpool favorite, Toshack, believes that the German must do the same to make life easier in Merseyside.

"If Liverpool does not win a trophy this year, he still has a decision to make (about Klopp)," said Toshack, former manager of Real Madrid and Wales.

"Things are looking pretty good for the moment, but it's Klopp's third full season in Liverpool and that's a tough test for him.

"You may not have a chance to win a trophy, but in the best clubs, that's what counts.

Jurgen Klopp TEAMtalk

"It's such a fine line, but when you're in a club like Liverpool, it's all about it."

Former Borussia boss Dortmund, Klopp, initially accepted a three-year contract to become director of Liverpool in October 2015.

He signed an extended six-year contract in July 2016, with the US owners in Liverpool claiming that it would have been "irresponsible" not to offer Klopp a long-term contract.

Liverpool, unbeaten, is two points ahead of champion Manchester City, and makes a huge trip to the Champions League at Paris St Germain on Wednesday.

"Klopp seems to be a great guy," Toshack added.

"He's open with the players and tells how it's going.

"Perhaps he is sometimes too passionate, but the line of demarcation is so thin between the first and the second.

"You feel that City has the upper hand over Pep Guardiola because they have trophies behind them.

"It's a big problem and Liverpool has not won yet."

John Toshack was speaking at the launch of the book "De Tosibah Books: My Journey through Football", published by deCoubertin Books for £ 20
