SINGAPORE – Soon after its repaving, the concrete flooring located behind several buildings of the Woodlands Housing Authority was found covered with algae, prompting residents to alert the city council.
A photo shared on the Reddit forum thread on Sunday, November 25 shows dark green spots beside the empty bridge several blocks away in Woodlands Street 81.
The Reddit user said it was "months" since the appearance of the algae.
We do not know when the photo was taken.
Several other Reddit users have stated that the growth of algae could pose a potential risk of falling, particularly for older people living in the area who could slip and eventually get hurt.
In response to questions, Sembawang City Council said that the affected area was near blocks 870-882, as well as the blocks 801, 802, and 804 near Republic Polytechnic.
The city council spokesman said the algae growth was caused by poor work due to remodeling of the concrete surface. Reconstruction work was carried out between last October and April.
"We have discussed with the contractor in charge of the re-rendering, and he has agreed to carry out rectification work," the spokesman added.
Re-rendering involves hacking the concrete surface and reapplying fresh concrete on it.
These concrete surfaces face natural deterioration and wear over time.
The spokesman said that he had asked the contractor to increase the frequency of surface washes from once a month to every two weeks in the meantime.
Anti-fungicidal chemicals will also be used to slow the growth of algae during grinding.
