He spent several weeks at the test club, mainly with the youth team, but also had a session with the first team.

The 20-year-old was invited to join the club on trial after being released by Newcastle United at the end of last season.

Unlike many goalies of his age, Woolston is only six feet tall, but it is understood that he impressed scouts and coaches by his playful style and his distributive abilities.

Professionnal career

A native of North Shields, Woolston has played most of his football in his native Northeast since arriving in Newcastle in 2014.

Since then, the youth has climbed the ranks of St James's Park, interspersed with sporadic lending episodes in non-league members.

Woolston spent short-term stays in Gateshead, Darlington, Blyth Spartans and South Shields, while also playing on the Newcastle reserve side.

The goalkeeper kept three white sheets in Premier League 2 last season and made an appearance in the EFL trophy.

He was released by Newcastle at the end of the 2017/18 season and Woolston was invited to the test by United and impressed the club.

What will be his role?

MEN. Sport includes United have signed Woolston to cover players under 23, Matej Kovar, and his goalkeeper, Alex Fojticek, 18 years old.

It is unlikely that the young player is on a match team. However, if there are any worries of injury throughout the season, he could be recruited into a larger match team, as we have seen with Kovar.
