Xiaomi chairman, Lei Jun, announced today, at the AIoT developer conference of the company, that Xiao AI, smart speaker, has more than 34 million active users monthly since September, report the local media (in Chinese). According to Lei, Xiaomi's smart speakers have been woken up 8 billion times by users to activate around 100 million devices.

Xiao AI is particularly popular among the "empty nest elderly" and children, said Lei.

AI + IoT has been part of Xiaomi's core strategy for over 5 years and will continue to be, said Lei. He thinks that AI + IoT technology will infiltrate all devices in the next 3 to 5 years.

The Chinese smartphone maker has sold more than 132 million IoT devices in the last quarter, making it more consumer electronics than any other company in the world, including Google and Apple. According to iResearch, the global market share of Xiaomi IoT devices was 1.7%, higher than 0.9% for Apple, 0.9% for Amazon and 0.7% for Samsung.

In addition, Xiaomi also announced a new partnership with the furniture giant IKEA to collaborate on smart home appliances and furniture. IKEA's intelligent lighting system will be integrated with Xiaomi IoT technology by December.

Xiaomi is not the only one to bet on smart speakers to become the next big trend in consumer electronics. The Chinese retail giant, JD.com, launched its first smart home speaker, LingLong DingDong, in 2016, nicknamed "China's response to Amazon Echo."

The Chinese market of smart speakers is becoming more crowded.

According to the Canalys technology market research firm, the Chinese giant e-commerce Alibaba has delivered 2.2 million smart speakers Tmall Genie in the last quarter, Xiaomi has delivered 1.9 million of 39, Xiao AI speakers, while Baidu shipped 1 million Xiao DU speakers, overtaking JD.com. from the first on the market.
