SIOUX CITY (KTIV) – Siouxland District Health Department officials say they hope Iowa’s new mitigation efforts will help bring COVID-19 cases here in Siouxland.

The proclamation from Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds went into effect Tuesday morning at 12:01 a.m., requiring everyone to wear masks in indoor public spaces.

Reynolds also limited many indoor gatherings to a maximum of 15 people and 30 outdoor gatherings, including family gatherings.

SDHD officials said hospitals are currently overwhelmed with COVID-19. They said the only way to reduce those hospitalizations was to reduce the number of cases.

Tyler Brock, deputy director of the Siouxland District Health Department, said hospitals must also be able to care for non-COVID patients.

“We absolutely hope this will produce the desired effect. The hospitals are busy. More than busy. They’ve been pretty stressed out recently and we need the medical resources, the medical community is functioning at a high level,” Brock said.

Brock adds about 7-8% of COVID-19 cases end up in hospitals.
