“Anyone who has lived as long as me is alive because they have already been vaccinated.” – Sir Ian McKellen, 2020

COVID-19 vaccination programs are being rolled out in a number of Western countries. In the UK, vaccination efforts have been underway for a week now, with the first resident receiving theirs publicly, and with the country focusing on vaccinating elderly residents as quickly as possible, a number of celebrities have received theirs. : Lionel Blair, Marty Wilde, Pastry‘s Prue Leith and more recently Sir Ian McKellen.

The 81-year-old star the Lord of the Rings and X Men received her first of two doses of Pfizer’s vaccine at Queen Mary’s University Hospital in London. He said he was “euphoric” to finally have a chance to protect him from COVID-19.

“Anyone who has lived as long as me is alive because they’ve already been vaccinated,” McKellen told reporters at the hospital.

McKellen described the experience as “painless” and “convenient” and said it was “a very special day” after Dr Phil Bennett-Richards gave him his injection. He also made sure to encourage others to make sure they also receive their vaccines as soon as they are available.

“Getting in touch and meeting with NHS staff and saying thank you for their hard work is a bonus, I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone,” he said. “I feel very lucky to have received the vaccine… I really hope that as more and more people get vaccinated we will move forward on the path to returning to a more normal way of life.

McKellen’s words may turn out to be more important than he thinks. COVID-19 vaccinations have arrived and could end the pandemic – but that would require a huge percentage of the population to take the vaccine (some experts estimate as high as 80%). However, this is happening just as the World Health Organization says refusal to get vaccinated is a major global threat to public health. Many people are skeptical of this vaccine – many are even skeptical of the pandemic itself, even after more than 300,000 people have died in the United States alone.

In the United States, the first vaccine supplies go to frontline healthcare workers, with people living in retirement homes expected to be next. Healthy members of the general public will likely not be eligible for vaccines until spring or summer. Hopefully seeing high profile celebrities like Sir Ian McKellen happily receiving their photos will help people see that they are safe, effective, and necessary for a return to normal life.

Maintenant, comment pouvons-nous amener Betty White à l’avant de la ligne de vaccination?
