September 22, 2021 – On Monday, September 20, at approximately 7:14 a.m., Oregon State soldiers and emergency personnel responded to a four-vehicle crash on Route 126 near milepost 37.

Preliminary investigation revealed that a Kenworth log truck, driven by Eugene’s Shane McVay (64), was heading east when the loaded trailer overturned. The trailer struck a westbound Toyota Prius operated by Sarah Susman (25) of Springfield and a Dodge Ram towing a boat operated by Randall Tokich (70) of Eugene. The Dodge Ram then struck an eastbound Ford Mustang operated by Jordyn Tippett (20) of Coquille.

Susman suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased. McVay and Tippett were transported to Sacred Heart Medical Center in RiverBend with injuries. Tokich was slightly injured.

Susman was a part-time employee of the Western Lane Ambulance District and was driving to work when the accident occurred.

Western Lane Ambulance and Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue social media posted: “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends, and all of our WLAD and SVFR team at this difficult time. “

Susman was recently hired by WLAD after completing the Intermediate EMT program at Lane Community College. She had been a volunteer paramedic and firefighter for three years.

Monday evening, Route 126 was still closed, with a detour to Poodle Creek Road and Route 36.

OSP was assisted by the Lane County Sheriff’s Office and ODOT.
