Six-figure Mercedes-Benz EQS gets 350-mile range

The all-electric Mercedes-Benz EQS is packed with luxury and tech features. Now we know it will be competitive with some of its six-figure rivals when it comes to range, as official estimates are finally from the Environmental Protection Agency.

The agency says the rear-drive version is expected to travel around 350 miles on a full battery. Buyers of the all-wheel-drive version should expect a little less, around 340 miles. That’s about equal with Tesla’s new three-motor Plaid Model S, which the EPA says is good for around 348 miles at a full load on 21-inch wheels. Tesla says the Model S Plaid on 19-inch wheels should approach 400 miles, but that claim has yet to be evaluated by the EPA. A long-range, twin-engine Model S is said to eclipse 400 miles, although this car has apparently been delayed in favor of the Plaid.

Audi’s E-Tron GT – which is built on the Porsche Taycan’s electric drivetrain – is likely to be rated even less, somewhere in the mid to low 200 mile range. The only EV that easily eclipses the numbers in the EQS lineup is the Lucid Air. This sedan received a whopping 520 mile rating from the EPA in September.

A big question with the EQS when it goes on sale in the United States later this year will be whether buyers cross-buy against these other EVs or if they want a Mercedes-Benz and go for the electric. If it’s the latter, there’s an added incentive in that the EQS’s starting price is actually lower than the gas-powered S-Class it will likely replace one day. While an added range of over 100 miles is always nice, going into the mid-300s should be enough for the daily and weekly needs of most buyers.
