Atlanta United moved to the top spot in the Eastern Conference with a 2-0 win over the Portland Timbers, their team's first win in three months. The Five Stripes continued their fantastic journey with their new style offensive game to beat the Timbers again. Here are some random thoughts at 2 am on a refreshing victory away from the Benz:
- What else can we say about this recovery? This match proves that it is legitimate. They showed that they could dominate home teams while having the offensive spirit. Any remaining questions as to whether or not this could be translated away from home are put to bed in this one. They stayed true to the risk and reward mentality, and it worked out again. Portland, despite its mediocre place in the standings, is a very talented team, especially in attack. For Frank de Boer's team, going very far towards the goal while preserving Brian Fernandez, Diego Valeri and Sebastian Blanco of the brand is very impressive.
- Looks like Josef's three-headed monster, Pity and Barco still have work to do to get to the same page, but it looks like it's getting better. Chances have been created in this game, it's just unfortunate that Pity and Barco do not seem to be able to find the target when needed. Josef, on the other hand, performed incredibly well with his only chance. What a finish.
- The form of pity continues to be very stable. It did not have as much impact as in the previous two games, but it was still pretty good, especially when needed. This coherence is very encouraging. He should still have won another penalty. Barco, meanwhile, seems to have lost some of the confidence that had excited him much earlier in the season. Once one or the other or both begin to find the bottom of the net with these chances being created, this could be a scary proposition for the rest of the MLS.
- The three defenders of Pogba, Robinson and LGP did their best to bend without breaking. Robinson again had a fantastic match, eliminating all the mistakes while limiting his personal incidents to minimal incidents. LGP also had a very good performance, he was safer with possession of the ball and strong in each tackle. Pogba had trouble following Ebobisse and Fernandez. His rear split is unparalleled, but when things get worse in the defensive form, he seems to get lost and has to catch up.
- I do not often praise or criticize Brad Guzan. He introduces himself and does his job. Sometimes he misses a backup, sometimes he gropes a ball or two. He comes with the territory. I do not analyze it too much because I will not pretend to know the subtleties of the goalkeeper. However, you do not need many years of experience to understand that the stops he made on Julio Cascante in the second half were something really special. Add to that the fact that he was beaten throughout the match and that Guzan deserves all the praise for this one.
- This could possibly end up being one of the biggest victories of the season. The team's earned confidence on the road and this kind of dominant result could be huge. With only eight MLS games under his belt, including five away, you could not have picked a better time to start finding your best form as a team. Hopefully this will continue in Orlando this weekend and beyond.
