At least 16 people were killed and seven injured in a plane crash in Russia’s Tatarstan region, according to the RIA news agency citing emergency services.
The plane was carrying a group of paratroopers, the emergency ministry said as quoted by the TASS news agency.
Seven people were extracted alive from the wreckage, the statement said. The other 16 are “without sign of life,” an emergency services representative told RIA Novosti news agency.
The aircraft was a Let L-410 Turbolet, which is a twin-engine, short-range transport aircraft. The accident took place at around 9:23 am (6:23 am GMT).
Images released by the ministry showed the plane broken in half with a badly dented nose.
Russian aviation safety standards have improved in recent years, but accidents, particularly involving aging aircraft in remote areas, are not uncommon.
Last month, an aging Antonov An-26 transport plane crashed in the Russian Far East, killing six people.
The 28 people aboard an Antonov An-26 twin-engine turboprop died in an accident in Kamchatka in July.
The country also frequently experiences non-fatal aerial incidents that result in diverted flights and emergency landings, usually due to technical issues.
Flying in Russia can be especially dangerous in remote areas of the vast country, such as the Arctic and the Far East, where weather conditions are often extreme.
